FILA has added a new Athletes section to its website, which will allow wrestlers across the world a chance to have input on a variety of issues in the sport. It has been developed under the direction of the FILA Athletes Commission, which is chaired by FILA Vice-president Stan Dziedzic. “The Purpose of the Athletes section is to provide a platform for the athletes to have a voice," said Mr. Dziedzic. The first project in the Athletes Section is a questionnaire concerning changes to the international wrestling rules which has been approved by the FILA Bureau. Current and former wrestlers are asked to share their ideas regarding rule modifications following the London Olympic Games.
The goal of this Athlete's questionnaire is simple: "How do both disciplines of international wrestling fashion a more dynamic set-of-rules for the viewing audience that provides a level playing field for all of the participants, allows the best prepared wrestlers to prevail, and yet maintains a distinct difference between the Freestyle and Greco-Roman styles?"
Athletes are asked to develop rule changes in which the total time to complete daily wrestling sessions would not be lengthened, the total number of days to complete the championships are not increased and the rules provide that as much as possible, the athletes and not the referees, determine the outcome of the matches.
Each National Federation is encouraged to use this questionnaire and hold a forum with its most thoughtful wrestlers about potential rules changes. After establishing a consensus from their athletes, each Federation may post its best suggestions to the Athletes section of the website. Each Federation will soone receive a password for this purpose.
FILA look forward to the athlete’s suggestions !
